7 Things to do while in Dubrovnik

We heard many romantic stories about the old town of Dubrovnik when we were kids, and saw many photos of our hippie parents exploring narrow stone streets. We wanted to visit “Kings Landing” for quite some time now to see that marble in its full shine.

Interesting piece of information – Dubrovnik is on the Unesco`s list of world heritage sites since 1979.

The only limiting factor was our available time which was about 7h so this post could also bare the name “Dubrovnik – Hectic sightseeing guide” 🙂

This is our list of things to do while in Dubrovnik:

1.  Explore narrow streets

At first, you wind find yourself in the river of tourists who are trying to flood the main street and use every possible photo opportunity.
We wanted more so we found first narrow street to escape the hectic crowds and all of the sudden like in the fairy tale we were alone and you couldn’t hear anything more than the gentle summer breeze. It was magical just to get lost on purpose just to see where people live, to see bartenders and cooks on the break behind the restaurants and just to feel the spirit of the place. We tried to see as much as we could, every single street, every staircase, every little bridge and hole in the thick walls and sadly we realized that we could roam for a few days and we only had hours left.

2. Take a cable car

Very near outside the town walls is the base point for cable cars. These are modern cable cars with big glass windows which ensures the best possible view to the old town below. It takes under 4 minutes to the top of the Srđ hill where you can enjoy the summer breeze and have a coffee or a meal in the restaurant with one of the best views in the world!!! And remember that wonders can happen when you change your perspective.

3.  Visit some of the museums

You could just enjoy the old town which is a museum in the open by itself. You have to see and visit old churches, water fountains, galleries in the open, hidden staircases, and small squares. Also, you can find official museum institution which was founded in 1872, when it was known as the Patriotic Museum. Today it consists of four units: the Cultural History, the Maritime, the Archaeological and the Ethnographic Museums.

4. Walk the walls

These walls today are just a reminder of the long-gone time of maritime wars and destruction. Those walls played a crucial role in city defence and have never been breached thru middle ages. Estimated length of the wall is 1,94 km, main walls are up to 6m thick and up to 25m high and for the added protection there is even an additional range of slanted supporting walls. Impressive to see and even more impressive is to go up and have an unforgettable panoramic view of the old city.

5. Walk of shame

If you are “Game Of Thrones” fan or at least you value good cinematography you should definitely visit the Jesuit steps, located on the south side of Gundulić square to recreate your own epic walk of shame, for more diehard fans you could also visit “Littlefinger’s brothel”. And just a friendly advice – keep your eyes wide opened because they were shooting GOT in hundreds of different places inside city walls. For the best experience, you could even join an official “Game Of Thrones” guided tour.

6. Always be stylish

All these sights can cause sensory overload so we advise searching for shade a take a break, to sum up, your impressions. We used our break to taste a few local wines, local beer and some fresh locally grown and made produce (mushrooms, cheese, domestic bread, meat delicatessen) and let me tell you, the locals really know their food and wine!!! If you are a seafood lover you won’t be disappointed with freshly caught fish prepared with olive oil, fresh herbs, one typical example of Mediterranean cuisine.
